Chapter 23

Triangles

Ange would have loved to stake out the construction site on Britannia Avenue herself but knew that this was not a risk worth taking. Even though they now had several data sources to triangulate, it would be helpful to somehow attach a GPS tracker onto the Mitsubishi. She was certain that Lomax and Smith were up to no good. Ange verbalised this thought over lunch as they waited for more camera alerts.

Anders turned to Fredericks. ‘What do you reckon, Peter? Any chance we could pull that off at such short notice? If they are headed this way, I reckon we have fifteen minutes.’

Ange jumped in front of this train of thought. ‘Wouldn’t we need a warrant to do something like this?’

‘Normally, yes, but we already have authority to do whatever is necessary concerning Lomax and Smith after Namba Heads. I think we’ll be fine,’ answered Anders. ‘Peter?’

‘Let me make a few calls. We would need them to park on the street to pull it off. I think it would be too dangerous to attempt it within the construction compound, particularly with such little planning,’ suggested Fredericks as he made a move to his laptop, his lunch now forgotten.

Ange had a thought. ‘Could we get the fire service to make a call and park across the driveway?’

‘Great idea, Ange. Peter, you organise a team ready to install a tracker and I’ll ring my counterpart here and see whether the fire service can oblige.’

With that, Anders and Fredericks leaped into action. Ange also had a thought and emailed Pat Crowley from her phone, asking him to include the visitor logs from today. She tagged the email as Important—Confidential.

Within five minutes, the three reconvened over their half-finished lunch. Fredericks had arranged for a couple of plain-clothes detectives from the Surfers Paradise branch to tag the vehicle. They planned to swing by in a few minutes and pick up a tracker that Fredericks had pulled from a cupboard. He scoffed down his lunch and headed downstairs to meet them on the street.

Sally Anders’ task had been much more difficult. Apparently, the relationship between the Gold Coast fire and police services was at a low point. After some negotiation, the local police eventually agreed to ring their first responder colleagues with a concocted story of an anonymous report of a serious fire hazard on the site. Apparently, since the ACP cladding issue, the fire services weren’t averse to leaning on builders and property developers. ‘Interesting dynamics,’ thought Ange to herself.

Fredericks was back soon enough and the three of them crowded around his desk to watch the action, courtesy of a feed to the security cameras set up previously. Fredericks’ technological competency impressed Ange.

Seeing as their apartment was situated midway between the fire station and the construction site, they heard the blaring siren before the fire truck appeared on camera. It did exactly what they had hoped, parking squarely across the driveway, which was the only viable parking spot for their big truck. Ange watched
